Infant Reflux

What You Need to Know

Many babies (and some older children) experience signs of reflux. This might include spitting up after meals or fussiness after feedings. If your baby is spitting up a lot or seems unsettled, reflux could be the culprit and a check-in with your pediatrician can help you rule out any underlying causes. The most common reasons for reflux include: Food sensitivities (either directly through breastmilk or formula) and formula intolerance in formula-fed babies. If your baby is formula fed, consider switching formulas to see if reflux improves. A brand I like to recommend due is By Heart. A goat milk formula by Holle is another option.

Most of the time, reflux lasts between 6-12 months, and many babies grow out of it. But there are a few simple things you can do to help ease discomfort:

  • Smaller, more frequent feedings to avoid overloading the stomach

  • Keep your baby elevated after feedings to reduce reflux

  • Avoid putting your baby in a car seat right after feeding—it can increase the chances of reflux because of the angle

Consider Seeing a Pediatric Chiropractor:
Chiropractic care is a fantastic option for treating reflux! Gentle adjustments can help ensure that the nervous system, including the nerves that control digestion, is functioning properly. Chiropractic adjustments can also help relax muscles, including those in the digestive system, which may allow for improved digestion and reduce the likelihood of reflux. Chiropractic care helps ease tension in the body, including the jaw, neck, and shoulders, which can lead to smoother and more comfortable feeding experiences, helping to prevent discomfort that contributes to reflux—I could go on and on!
